Sharks 5, RedWolves 1
WILMINGTON, NC – Led by a seven-inning shutout effort from the arm of Max Alba (UNC-Chapel Hill), the Wilmington Sharks won the club’s home finale 5-1 over the Florence RedWolves on Friday, July 30.
Alba earned the victory as he cruised through the matchup on 65 pitches, limiting the RedWolves to four hits, walked one batter and struck out five to finish his season with a 1.82 ERA.
Ryan Obrecht (Wayne State College) and Liam Doolan (Tennessee Wesleyan University) combined to close out the game in the final two innings. Obrecht struck out one while allowing a run on three hits and Doolan struck out two in a definitive ninth frame.
The Sharks took a 2-0 advantage after the first inning when Andrew Ciufo (Georgetown) scored on a single by John Behrends (Belmont) that resulted in a fielding error in centerfield. Alec Makarewicz (East Carolina) followed by knocking a sacrifice fly to center allowing Behrends to score the second run of the game.
Wilmington added single runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings as they slashed singles, drew walks and took advantage of defensive miscues by the RedWolves.
Zach Budzik (UNC-Greensboro) and Alec Makarewicz piloted the Wilmington offense each logging two hits in three at-bats with Budzik plating two RBI and Makarewicz scoring a run and plating one. Behrends drew two walks to finish the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI followed by Rece Sabo who was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Ciufo added a hit and a run scored while Donald Hansis (College of Charleston) went 1-for-3.
Sharks 9, Flamingos 4
FLORENCE, SC – The Wilmington Sharks handed the newly-renamed Florence Flamingos their first loss under the moniker in a 9-4 final at Sparrow Stadium in Florence, SC on Saturday, July 31.
Three Sharks recorded multi-hit games in the season finale as Wilmington scored seven runs across the first three frames including a four-run second inning. Cody Jansen (St. Louis University) singled to begin the inning then scored along with Andrew Ciufo on a three-run blast by Behrends. Rich Ciufo (Richmond) followed by drawing a walk and scored when Taber Monger0 (UNC-Wilmington) doubled to extend the Wilmington lead to 6-1.
Wilmington added a run in the top of the third and two more in the top of the seventh before allowing three runs to the Flamingos in the bottom of the eighth.
Andrew Ciufo finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, two runs, two RBIs and two walks place his final batting average at .352. Trotter Harlan (College of Charleston) matched Ciufo with a 2-for-3 game, a double, one run scored and one RBI. Jansen went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Behrends tallied at 1-for-5 night with his home run plating three and scoring two runs. Rich Ciufo went 1-for-2 with a run scored, two stolen bases and an RBI and David Smith (Connecticut) went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Mongero (UNC-Wilmington) added a 1-for-4 performance with a double and an RBI.
Southpaw Joey Kemlage earned the victory with six innings of work wherein he allowed a run on three hits, walked two and struck out six. Austin Skipper (William Peace University) followed Kemlage to the mound to strikeout one and allowing a run over one inning of work. Tyler Strickland (UNC-Wilmington) and Nate Nabholz (East Carolina) split the final two frames on the mound with Strickland allowing one hit and Nabholz striking out the side to conclude the game.
The Sharks return to play in 2022.
