WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Sharks announced the official release of the club’s 2022 season schedule featuring both Coastal Plain League and exhibition opponents on Wednesday, Feb. 2.
The summer campaign features a slate of 24 home and 24 road matchups against CPL opponents, totaling 48 league games. Additionally, the Sharks will also host 10 “Carolina Challenge” games versus exhibition opponents at Buck Hardee Field throughout the season.
The Sharks summer slate begins at home in Wilmington with contests against local talent with the American Legion Post 10 team on Tuesday, May 24 and the Cape Fear Area All-Stars on Thursday, May 26. The first CPL matchup brings the Morehead City Marlins to Buck Hardee Field on Saturday, May 28 followed by a “Carolina Challenge” game against the South Carolina Yankees of the National Independent Baseball Association on Tuesday, May 31.
Morehead City returns to Buck Hardee Field to face the Sharks on Thursday, June 2 followed by a visit from the Wilson Tobs the next evening for the first Friday home game of the season. The week of June 5 to June 11 sees home matchups against the Florence Flamingo (June 5), Fuquay-Varina Twins (June 6), the renamed Asheboro ZooKeepers (June 8) and Flamingos again (June 10).
Wilmington again welcomes the Marlins on Monday, June 13 and Thursday, June 16 before the nationally-recognized Savannah Bananas visit Buck Hardee Field on Saturday, June 18. The following week begins with a “Carolina Challenge” contest against the Myrtle Beach All-Stars on Monday, June 20. Beginning on Thursday, June 23 against the High Point-Thomasville HiToms, the Sharks host four consecutive home games featuring Holly Springs (June 24), the Clayton Clovers (June 25) and the Lexington County Blowfish (June 26).
On Wednesday, June 29, the Sharks open the second half of the season against Morehead City. Two days later on Friday, July 1 against Holly Springs, the club begins a stretch of six home games in seven days featuring: Morehead City (July 2), Wilson (July 3), the Coastal Carolina Rampage (July 5), Holly Springs (July 6) and Asheboro (July 7).
The 2022 season also sees the return of the CPL All-Star Game for the first time since 2019. The league’s best talent will face-off in the contest at Ting Stadium, home of the Holly Springs Salamanders, in Holly Springs, NC on Sunday, July 10.
After the All-Star game and a league off-day, Wilmington returns to Buck Hardee Field on Wednesday, July 13 to host Florence. Then, on Friday, July 15 the Sharks host Wilson before concluding the week with a matchup against the Carolina Disco Turkeys.
Wilmington welcomes the Wake Forest Fungo in a “Carolina Challenge” contest on Wednesday, July 20 followed by the final home matchups of the season against Morehead City on Thursday, July 21 and Saturday, July 23.
The final week of the regular season spreads three home games over five days as Wake Forest returns to Buck Hardee Field on Monday, June 25 before Lexington County arrives on Wednesday, June 27. The Sharks home finale is slated for Friday, July 29 against Florence with the Petitt Cup Playoffs beginning in the first week of August.
Home games at Buck Hardee Field any day Monday to Saturday are scheduled with a first pitch time of 7:05 PM EST with Sunday games beginning at 5:05 PM EST. The home game against Wilson on Sunday, July 3 begins at 7:05 PM EST and the Sunday, July 17 contest against the Disco Turkeys begins at 4:05 PM.
