WILMINGTON, NC – Morehead City’s Nick Sanders led the Marlins in hitting and helped the reigning back-to-back Coastal Plain League Champions to a 6-3 win over the Wilmington Sharks Thursday night at the Shark Tank.
Sanders finished the game a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate with one run scored, an RBI, and two walks.
The Sharks electrified its sellout crowd earlier in the evening after a Brett Carson double scored Rece Sabo from second and gave the Sharks a 1-0 advantage in the second inning. The Marlins, however, overcame a 3-2 deficit after posting four runs in the eighth; an inning where the Sharks committed three of its four errors on the night.
Starting pitcher Josh Harlow had a strong outing for the Sharks. The 6-feet-3 right hander pitched four innings while only giving up one hit, one run, and secured three strikeouts. Wilmington’s Cade Udell took the loss and moves to 0-1 on the young season. Udell was one of six Shark pitchers used Thursday night, half of which appeared in the eighth inning alone.
Zack Budzik, Raheem Salmon, and Jack Lynch led Wilmington’s offense with two hits apiece. Budzik finished the night with an RBI while Lynch had one run scored.
The Sharks will head to Morehead City tomorrow to face the Marlins then travel to Florence, SC on Saturday, May 29 to take on the RedWolves. Friday’s game against Florence will be followed by a road matchup against the Holly Spring Salamanders on Sunday, May 30.
Head Coach Russ Burroughs and the Sharks will return to Buck Hardee Field at Legion Stadium on Thursday, June 3 when they again host Morehead City in the second match-up of the season for “The Golden Chumbucket.” Tickets are available for purchase here.
