Sharky Makes Appearance at Kids Earth Day, Relay for Life Print E-mail
Mon, May 5 2008
Sharky has been warming up for the baseball season by making rounds to a couple of special area events.  KIDZink Magazine's Earth Day at Hugh McRae Park and Pender County's Relay for Life at Topsail High School were on the list.

WILMINGTON, N.C. – KIDZink Magazine, along with Wilmington Sharks Pupz Club, sponsored the Progress Energy Kids Zone Earth Day 2008 poster contest.
Kids from local schools in New Hanover County submitted artwork to compete for the coveted front cover prize of their work and the opportunity to be the 1st winner of what has become a yearly event.

smiling_girl_-_web_jpg.jpgNikhil Yelamarthy, age 6, of Rachel Freeman Elementary School emerged as the winner with a colorful, all-encompassing picture that we found most befitting to represent the event.  His foresight and artistic hand was quite impressive for his age.

Nikhil was awarded the opportunity for his work to be showcased on the front cover of the April issue of KIDZink Magazine as well as a birthday party at Cardinal Lanes and a Wilmington Sharks Baseball Pupz Club membership for the 2008 season.

KIDZink Magazine is a monthly publication by kids for kids and their families.  It is distributed throughout the schools as well as 160 other retail locations.  Check out our website at www.kidzinkmagazine.com.  For more information, contact Lani Minihan at (910) 791-0688 extension 1012 for more details.

Meanwhile, Sharky and others from the Wilmington Sharks front office traveled up to Topsail High School to walk for a good cause amongst hundreds of participants in Pender County’s Relay for Life.  What started out as a very small event the year prior, the event has itself grown astronomically, giving event organizers and event participants a great feeling that there are many that want to help raise money for cancer research and raise awareness of the disease.

ribbon_cutting_relay_jpg.jpg Sadly, six-year-old Emily Hollis lost her battle with cancer just two weeks prior to the event.  Many area children helped celebrate Emily’s life by wearing t-shirts printed with a picture Emily made before she passed away.  She was the true inspiration for all of those that appeared that day.

While walking laps around the track was the first order of business, there were numerous other activities inside the track’s perimeter including dancing and music, bounce houses, and tents filled with crafts and other wares.

Event organizer Audrea George said that last year’s Relay for Life featured around 15-20 children walking, and this year’s event grew upwards of 100 children.  George expects next year’s Relay for Life to continue it’s exponential growth, which is great news for an event that helps raise funds for a great cause.
