The Wilmington Sharks announce today that they have signed two players for the 2007 Season. Ryan Hamme from Campbell University to play first base and Rand Smith, an outfielder from Appalachian State University, will play for the sharks this season. Ryan Hamme, 6-3/205, is a sophomore at Campbell University and will return home to Wilmington to play first base for the Sharks. He graduated from Ashley High School in 2005 where he was a three-time letter winner for the Screaming Eagles and named the Eugene Ashley Male Athlete of the Year his senior year. During his freshman year at Campbell, he earned a second team All A-Sun selection as a second baseman and was named to A-Sun All-Freshman team. He also had most hits (58) by a Camel freshman since 1998 including a 10 game hitting streak from April 1-15, batting .394. Rand Smith, 6-0/185, is a sophomore joining the Sharks from Appalachian State University to play outfield. He is from Bolivia, North Carolina where he played for South Brunswick High School. Last season at ASU, he appeared in 54 games, making 52 starts (49 in RF, three in CF), led team with three triples, and tied for team lead with 10 multi-RBI games. In his collegiate debut, Smith went 4-for-4 which was a season high for hits. The coastal plain league is the nation’s premier college summer baseball league, featuring 14 teams playing in three states (The Carolinas and Virginia). The league is certified by the NCAA and Major League Baseball, and gives college standouts the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats during the summer months. The CPL brings fans all of the fun of minor league baseball during a 56 schedule game June through August. Tickets for the 2007 season are now on sale at the Shark’s office.
