Well that was fun. In perhaps their best all around game of the season, the Sharks were victorious last night.
Andrew Guerra went where only two other Sharks had gone before, while a certain lefty from the Cape Fear continued a reign of late inning terror on the mound.
Win, lose, draw, rain out, until the lights go out on the 2009 season the crack media relations staff of the Sharks will tirelessly work to bring you "Shark Bits" like these each day.
Last Game Synopsis: The Sharks did most everything right last
night to pick up a 5-1 win in Columbia. It started early
with clutch hitting. Andrew Guerra had two two out RBI base
hits in his first two at bats to help lead the Sharks to a
3-1 cushion. Adam Schrader allowed a run in the first and
then no more as he and Hunter Ford combined for eight shut
out frames to end the game.
Initial Impression: At first glance, the numbers on tonight’s
starter J.C. Casey do not seem to jump right off the page.
But nothing could be further from the truth. Despite a sub
.500 record, J.C. has allowed just 21 earned runs in a
league high 64 and two thirds innings. Along with those
numbers J.C. has thrown a complete game nine innings, a
game in which he allowed just an unearned run over eight
frames and a scoreless 10 inning marathon performance.
For What its Worth: Of the 10 Sharks on the starting line-up
card yesterday, six have a first initial of A. Five of the
six batted in order starting with third place batter Adam
Eggemeyer down to Allen King batting seventh. With two more
Adams, an Andrew and an Alex, its safe to say the Sharks
brought their A game to Columbia.
My Oh My July: Lefty reliever Hunter Ford has had a
spectacular month. He has yet to allow a run in nine and
two thirds innings pitched, over appearances dating back to
the 27th of June. Over the stretch the Campbell Camel has
one more walk than strike outs but has pitched around the
free passes holding opponents to just a .102 batting
average during his marvelous month of mound work.
Plate Perfection: Andrew Guerra led the way offensively last
night going 4-4. That is just the third time this season a
Shark has had a flawless night at the plate. Adam Eggemeyer
pulled a 4-4 perfecto back on June 8th while Adam Gray went
3-3 three days earlier on June 5th. No Shark has had more
than 4 hits in a game and that has happened just 3 times as
Christian Overstreet had a 4-5 night on June 16th.
