Shark Bits for August 3rd Print E-mail
Monday, 03 August 2009 07:49

The Sharks will at worst go four and eight, a decent .500, to end the season. As winners of four of their last six however, they have a chance to get to the twenty win mark on the campaign.

To help take step one of their two win journey, a lefty coming off a sparkling month of July relief will look to conquer the swampland in a new month. Another help in the journey could be a Shark defense that settled in nicely during 2009.

While it would be easy to discount the last two games and begin lamenting what could of been by saying things like, "Well a .500 record would have put us in the post season," or, "If only those one run games had gone our way more often," Shark Bits is still focused on what's left of the season.

Last Game Synopsis: They played two on Sunday, eventually.
After a two hour and forty minute rain delay, the Sharks
and Wilson Tobs split a double header. The Tobs beat Adam
Schrader to take a 3-1 win in the delayed opener. In the
late night cap it was D.J. Nordquist getting the win as the
Sharks took another one run game, 3-2.

Hunter Gatherer: Hunter Ford will be taking the hill for his
second start of the season after completing a fantastic
month of July. The southpaw gathered up 13 frames of
scoreless pitching over six appearances in July. The last
time the Campbell Fighting Camel gave up a run was on the
27th of June. Over the stretch opponents are hitting under
.150 against him. The scoreless streak brings his ERA down
to 5.34 on the season in 14 total appearances.

Pitching and Defense: While the Sharks have struggled
offensively in 2009, the team’s pitching has settled into
the top half of the league standings. Their 3.45 team ERA
puts them sixth in the league in that category. Meanwhile
defensively the Sharks have had a solid season as well. A
.957 team fielding percentage stands as the fourth lowest
mark in the CPL.

To Beat a SwampDog: The former has been quite a challenge on
the season for the Sharks. After dropping their first four
straight to Fayetteville, Wilmington has picked up just two
wins over all 11 meetings between the two clubs. Both of
those wins came on the road for the Sharks, keeping
Fayetteville perfect at the “Shark Tank” on the season. The
Sharks hold a winning record against only one divisional
opponent, the Columbia Blowfish at 6 and 4.

Just Two To Go: The season has wound down to this. There are
two more games left on the Shark schedule, one on the road
tonight, one home on Tuesday. Winners in four of their last
six, the Sharks look to close out the season on a big
winning note, and reach the 20 game mark if they can take
the last two contests.
