It would have been a great story. Hometown All-Star wins the Home Run Derby. Phil Cerreto(Longwood) of Martinsville decided instead it would be his night. The right handed Cerreto just edged out Shark Adam Eggemeyer(SIU-Edwardsville) in the 2009 All-Star Home Run Derby presented by Hells Kitchen Monday night. Tied with 21 points and seven home runs apiece in the final round, Cerretto connected for one, which proved to be enough to take the crown with 24 points on eight home runs. Eggemeyer did put on quite a show for the fans at the "Shark Tank" this All-Star Monday night. The lefty slugger powered out five home runs in a second round groove, much to the delight of the crowd and his own cheering section, made up of Sharks teammates, just past the right field wall. Always the noble competitor, it was Eggemeyer's own foul call on a drive hugging the foul pole that cost him a final round home run and the Derby crown. The Steeleville Kid lofted a drive plenty deep enough over the wall in right, but directly at the foul pole. The right field line cheering section thought it fair and the call was made until Egggemeyer, from his batters box, quietly motioned foul. Eggemeyer will be back in action tomorrow night at the "Shark Tank" along with two more Sharks, Jesse Bosnik and Daniel Cropper, in the 2009 Coastal Plain League All-Star Game presented by Taco-Bell. The gates to Buck Hardee swing open at 6 p.m. with first pitch at seven. The Wilmington Sharks are members of the summer collegiate Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. In 2008 the Sharks drew more than 50,000 fans to the “Shark Tank” for an average of 1,650 per game.
