Wilmington Shark and UNCW Seahawk outfielder Bobby Leeper was named to the National team for the Coastal Plain League’s All-Star Game which will take place at McCrary Field in Asheboro, N.C., home of the Asheboro Copperheads.

Leeper has put up impressive numbers thus far through the 2008 season, hitting .321 with seven doubles, five triples, and three home runs.  He’s tied for the team lead in hits (44) and leads the Sharks in home runs and slugging percentage (.511).  He’s shown speed on the bases stealing 14 of 18 bases attempted and a strong arm in right field garnering three outfield assists.

For the UNCW Seahawks, Leeper played in 44 games (starting 28) hitting .328.  He earned a spot on the Cary Regional team and joined the Sharks after UNCW was eliminated by North Carolina.

Leeper could be joining other Sharks teammates in Asheboro, with news of the American team being announced on Thursday, July 17th at 11 a.m.  The Coastal Plain League accounts for all voting from league head coaches and media representatives and subsequently holds a draft to pair the teams up.

The Wilmington Sharks are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league.  Celebrating its 12th season, the Coastal Plain League features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.  The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.  Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.  For more information on the Coastal Plain League, please visit the league Web site at www.coastalplain.com.
