Thrilling Home Finale Has Everything but a Shark Win Print E-mail
Fri, August 1 2008
In a wild flury of ejections and late rallies the Sharks lost 9-6 to Florence in the final game at "The Tank" this season.

Two runs came home in the bottom of the ninth for the Sharks as they brought the tying run to the plate. But excitement was not enough to bring the runs home as runners were left at second and third when the ballgame came to an end.

With Florence leading by one after eight, things got a little strange in the 08 Buck Hardee finale. Two runs came home off reliever Chris Powell(Presbyterian) to spot Florence a three run lead. Manager Daniel Hersey(St. Leo) then put on a show of his own after he was thrown out of the ballgame arguing an interference call at the plate. But Hersey would not be the only Shark to hit the showers early.

Two batters later, Powell surrendered a two run home run to put the Wolves up by five. The very next pitch ran inside and hit the batter at which point Powell was immediately ejected from the ballgame. Peter Larson(Ferrum) would come on to record the final out.

The Sharks got out to a quick 1-0 lead in what started as a pitchers duel. Mike Alvarez(Florida Gulf Coast) and Ryan Graepel(North Carolina) started things with back to back singles in the bottom of the first. A sac fly off the bat of Bobby Leeper(UNC-Wilmington) brought Alvarez home.

Kolby Epley(College of Charleston) drove in two on the night. One in the third with a single to put the Sharks up 2-0. An inning later, Epley again drove in a run, this time with a fielders choice to make it 3-0.

Mike Rudman(Miami) would make the start and work into the seventh giving up five runs on ten hits, walking three with two strike outs. Kyle Deese(Clemson) would work a scoreless inning and two thirds holding down the Redwolves.

A three game road trip ends the season for the Sharks with games in Fayetteville, Columbia and Florence. The Sharks record drops to 22-30 on the 08 Coastal Plain season.
