After a close 4-2 loss in game one, the Tobs broke out the bats and streaked to a 10-1 win to sweep the day over the Sharks. Despite leading most of the game, the Sharks dropped the first contest late. Four runs, just two earned, came home in the bottom of the sixth for the Tobs off of relievers Peter Larson(Ferrum) and Chris Powell(Presbyterian) to beat the Sharks. Offensively the Sharks led 2-0 until that fated sixth frame. The top of the second got off to a rocky start for the Sharks. Cory Lyda(Presbyterian) slammed a lead off double to left, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Wilmington would not be denyed in the inning however, as John Nester(Clemson) and Matt Kirchner(Elon) would get things started with back to back singles. A third single off the bat of Bobby Leeper (UNC-Wilmington) would finally bring a run home and put the Sharks up 1-0. It would stay that way until the top of the 6th when Lyda singled to start things off again. The Presbyterian Junior moved up to second on a wild pitch. Then as he swiped third the catcher's throw sailed into left and Lyda came all the way around to make it 2-0. Chris Kennedy(Davidson)held the Tob's scoreless through six innings in his first start for the Sharks. The lefty spread three walks and three hits over the six while striking out three. Larson took the loss as he loaded the bases in the sixth with two walks and a single as he gave way to Powell. The runs came home on a single off of Powell that took a bad hop over Leeper's head and rolled to the wall clearing the bases. It was again a second inning run that put the Sharks up early 1-0. Lyda doubled with one out and came all the way around to score from second on a grounder hit deep in the hole by Kolby Epley(College of Charleston). In the bottom of the next inning however the Tobs took a 2-1 league and never looked back. A long schedule and even longer summer finally caught up to the Sharks pitching staff. Cory Burgess(USC-Sumter) started and took the loss. Outfielder Leeper came in to pitch and made his way through the fifth and sixth giving up six earned runs. It was a story of near misses in the second contest for the Sharks. Ryan Graepel(North Carolina) was cut down at home trying to score from second. Manager Daniel Hersey(St. Leo) argued the close call to no avail. An inning later Epley was robbed of a two run home run deep against the left field wall. The Sharks will be back home for the final two home games of the season Thursday and Friday night.
