Offensive Struggles Continue for Sharks in Wilson Print E-mail
Thu, July 10 2008
The Sharks picked up just two runs on eight hits as they fell to the Tobs 5-2 Thursday night.

The Sharks brough the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but could not score. Cory Lyda(Presbyterian) led things off with a single. Mike Alvarez(Florida Gulf Coast) singled but was caught stealing. Ryan Graeple(North Carolina) walked with one down to keep the hope alive but the big hit would not come.

Matt Freeman(Nebraska) started the ballgame and took the loss. Freeman worked into the seventh giving up three runs, just one earned on two walks and seven hits. Cory Burgess(USC-Sumter) gave up two more to the Tobs in his two innings of relief. Peter Larson(Ferrum) finished off the eighth for Burgess striking out one.

In the fourth inning Cory Lyda(Presbyterian) took a full count pitch deep into the Wilson night over a high right field fence to put the Sharks on the board first. But Wilson picked up three off of Freemanin the fifth. The Sharks managed to respond in the very next inning as Bobby Leeper(UNC-Wilmington) led things off with a triple. He came home on an Alvarez two out single to cut the Tob lead to one. But that was as close as the Sharks would get.

Freeman's own throwing error helpped the Tobs cause, but what was a makeshift defense at some positions for the Sharks turned in a quality defensive game. Daniel Parker(Illinois) filled in nicely at third and Kolby Epley(College of Charleston) looked like a natural across the diamond at first picking balls out of the dirt. Bobby Leeper(UNC-Wilmington) played his normal right field and made a diving gem of a play to on a sinking liner to get freeman out of a slight jam.

A long roadtrip to Thomasville and Asheboro awaits the Sharks who will be back at the Shark Tank Sunday for "Bark at the Park." The game against the Fayetteville Swampdogs starts at 5pm.
