Monday, 28 July 2008 16:11

Singles in the seventh and eighth were the only tallys for Florence in the hit column as three Shark pitchers combined to secure a 2-1 Shark win Monday night. Click to listen to a Shark Bytes Recap.

Tyler White(Alabama) took the hill for the spot start, his first of the season, and worked six hitless innings giving up just an unearned run. White struck out seven while walking only three.
The unearned run had White on the hook for the loss until the bottom of the sixth. Hunter Owen(Milsaps) walked to lead things off in the frame. Two outs later he stood at third base. Neal Pritchard(Elon) would be the two out hero, singling to left to bring Owen home.

Newcomer Chris Kennedy(Davidson) would work two scoreless frames in relief starting in the seventh. While he did give up the first hit, he struck out three of his own to keep the score standing at one into the eighth.

Pritchard was again in the middle of the scoring in the bottom of the eighth. With one down he drew a walk, stole second and then came all the way around to score on a single to right center off the bat of John Nester(Clemson). The Sharks would threaten to add on but would hand a one run lead to Wilmington native Chris Powell(Presbyterian) in the ninth.

Powell, who had two saves coming into the ballgame, struck out the first two batters he faced in the ninth. Then after a two out single he would induce a game ending grounder to pick up his fourth save and give the Sharks a 22-26 record on the season.

Its on to Fayetteville Tuesday for the Sharks as their race for the Petit Cup continues. Wilmington will be back home Thursday for the start of Fan Appreciation Weekend out at "the Tank." Its also another Thirsty Thursday with dollar beer and soft drinks all night long. All the fun starts at 7pm.
