WILSON, NC – After a tough 3-0 loss in 10 innings to Columbia the night before, the Wilmington Sharks looked to rebound in an inter-divisional game against the Wilson Tobs. However, a five-run second by the Tobs proved to be the difference as the Sharks fell 8-4 in Wilson.
Wilmington (19-21, 5-7 CPL second half) was able to scored in the second as Chris Mazza drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Greg Fujii. Justin Robey then walked to score Conor Szczerba and Alex Hill was hit by the pitch to score Ben Fish to make it 3-0 Sharks.
The Tobs (29-16, 11-6 CPL second half) responded quickly in the bottom half of the second by scoring five runs to make it 5-3. Wilson led off the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Michael Blanchard then singled up the middle to score Jacob Davis and Dan Capeless. Zac Mitchell's groundout then scored Gar Keen to make it 3-3. Blanchard then scored on a wild pitch by Sharks starter Joe Wagstaff (L, 3-3) to give Wilson the 4-3 lead. Nick Aranas' single to score Keith Morrisroe capped the second to make it 5-3.
The Sharks got one back in the fourth when Hill's single scored Ben Fish, but Mazza was caught in a rundown going for home and tagged out to end the inning.
Wilson answered the Sharks in the sixth when Mitchell's single up the middle scored Keen to make it 6-4 Tobs. The Tobs also added runs in the seventh and eighth to double up the Sharks 8-4 in the end.
Offensively, the Sharks were led by Fujii, who went 2-4 with a run scored and Hill who went 1-3 with 2 RBI's. Tobs pitcher Hudson (W, 4-0) went six innings, allowed five hits, four runs and struck out four. Wagstaff went five-plus innings, gave up 12 hits, six runs and struck out three.
