The Wilson Tobs turned another big second inning into their fourth victory in a row as they downed the Wilmington Sharks 8-4 on Friday night at Historic Fleming Stadium. After starter Curtis Hudson (4-0) was roughed up for three runs in the second by the Sharks (5-7, 19-21), the Tobs (11-6, 29-16) rallied around the Mount Olive Trojan by plating five in the same frame.
The inning started with three consecutive singles by Dan Capeless, Jacob Davis and Gar Keen. Michael Blanchard slapped a small roller to center to score two. A groundout by shortstop Zac Mitchell tied the game when Keen scored from third. With Blanchard perched at third base, a wild pitch by Sharks’ starter Joe Wagstaff (3-3) brought home the center fielder for the go-ahead score. Keith Morrisroe and Ryan Daughtry kept the inning alive with a single and walk respectively. Nick Aranas gave the Tobs poked a run-scoring to left to push the advantage to 5-3. Hudson would settle down from there to work six innings. He allowed a total of four runs on five hits and four walks. He fanned two hitters. Wagstaff finished his night after five innings. He allowed six runs on 12 hits. The Sharks closed to within 5-4 on an RBI-single by Alex Hill in the fourth, but Wilson added to the lead with single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth. In the fifth, it was Mitchell delivering with a single that scored Keen. A walk, two singles and an error allowed the Tobs to score in the seventh. Nick Aranas scored in the eighth after a double over the head of Justin Robey in right field. A fielder’s choice and wild pitch allowed the USC-Aiken Pacer to cross home. The Tobs tied a season high for hits in a game with 15 for the evening. This article has been re-posted from www.coastalplain.com. |
