Aaron Preston’s single to left field scored Justyn Carter from second base to give the Wilmington Sharks a 6-5 win over the Florence RedWolves (2-2) in 11 innings Friday night.

Carter reached base after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved up to second base after a walk to Ricardo Lizcano. After a popup, Preston sent a 1-1 pitch through the hole between third baseman and shortstop for the game-winner.

Preston said that at first he was unsure if the ball would get through, but once it did he “knew it was over” with Carter’s speed on the bases.

After dropping their first three games of the season, the Sharks have now won two in a row and improve to 2-3 overall.

Sharks reliever Ross Whitley tossed the final three innings and picked up the win after holding Florence scoreless and allowing only two hits over the three frames.

The Sharks jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the second and then adding a run in both the second and third innings. Florence scored a run in the fifth to cut into the margin before adding two runs in the seventh to pull within one at 4-3.

Wilmington added another run in the bottom of the seventh, which turned out to be huge, as Florence added two more runs in the eighth that tied the game at five-all.

Preston finished the night 3-for-6 with the game-winning RBI, while Lizcano tallied a 2-for-3 night with two walks and scored twice.

Michael Wilson turned in a three-hit night and Adam Engel drove in three RBIs for the RedWolves in the loss.

The Sharks now hit the road, with games at Columbia Saturday night, at Fayetteville Monday night and in Florence on Tuesday night before returning back to the Shark Tank on Wednesday night when they open a three-game home stand against Fayetteville.
