The Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League (CPL) announced the hiring of Andrew Aguilar as general manager. The 36-year old Laramie, Wyoming native brings more than twelve years of professional baseball experience to the Sharks’ organization.

A graduate of the University of Wyoming, which features the well-known logo of a rider on a bucking horse, Aguilar is preparing for a wild ride of his own in his first year in the CPL.

“The chance to run an organization that has such a storied history is an incredible opportunity,” Aguilar said of the Sharks, which is preparing for their 60-game schedule starting play in May of 2010, “and being able to work in a place like Wilmington, is very exciting!”

Aguilar was general manager (GM) for the Alexandria Aces of the Continental Baseball League last season and was also assistant general manager (AGM) for the Aces of the United Baseball League from 2006-2008.  Prior to his stint in Alexandria, Aguilar was the AGM of the Jackson Senators of the Central Baseball League from 2002-2005.  He has worked for the Jackson Diamond Kats of the Texas-Louisiana League and the Southern Oregon Timberjacks of the Northwest League. Aguilar, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications/Broadcasting from UW, the school that produced broadcasting legend Curt Gowdy, began his professional baseball career as a radio broadcaster. Andrew even managed to broadcast games during his first several seasons as AGM, until deciding to focus his career on the front office.

“Andrew is a hard worker who loves baseball and knows what it takes to produce a successful organization,” said Darrell Handelsman, President, noting that four of Aguilar’s teams have won Organization of the Year awards.  “I am excited to see the style and brand of baseball that he will bring in here this season, as it should be fun for the fans of the Sharks!”

The Wilmington Sharks are members of Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer league of fifteen baseball teams located in North and South Carolina and Virginia.  The CPL will play a 60 game schedule between late-May and mid-August.
