The Wilmington Sharks (10-13) bats came to play on Saturday night, plating eight runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 16-1 win over the Petersburg Generals (3-20) on the second of four straight road games for the Sharks.

The offensive output overshadowed the strong performance the Sharks received from starting pitcher Jake Mayers, who earned his second win of the season after tossing seven innings of two-hit baseball and carrying a no hitter into the sixth inning. Mayers also struck out six Generals while allowing no runs and only one walk in the outing.

Carter

Justyn Carter had a three-hit, two-RBI night in the Sharks' big win Saturday night.

The Sharks started hot and never looked back, bringing 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first and plating the eight runs on four hits in the inning.

In that first inning, Alex Freedman’s three-RBI double was the big hit in the inning, while Justyn Carter doubled and drove in two RBI in his second at bat of the inning. Daniel Aldrich and K.J. McAllister each had an RBI in the inning on groundouts as well.

The third inning saw Wilmington plate two more runs off of Ricardo Lizcano’s two-RBI single that plated Evan Campbell and McAllister as the lead swelled to 10-0.

A five-run fifth inning all but finished off the game, as the Sharks tallied six hits in the inning. Casey Allison came into the game and lifted an RBI double which was followed up two batters later by a Mayers’ RBI single. Also coming into the game, Scott Coleman and Emilio Pagan each tagged doubles to the gap, with Coleman picking up an RBI while Pagan’s hit gave him two RBIs.

The Sharks final run of the night came when Russ Stupienski picked up an RBI when he drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth.

Lizcano and Freedman each tallied three RBIs to lead the Sharks in that category, while Carter and Pagan each had a two-RBI night. Carter’s two-RBI night came as part of his 3-for-5 night at the plate, the only Shark to have a three-hit night in the win.
