WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Sharks entered Friday night searching for their first win of the CPL second half but they came up empty-handed. Going up against the first-half south division champion Florence RedWolves, the Sharks ran into a brick wall of pitching and defense as they fell in both games 4-0.

In the first game, RedWolves starter Dallas Beeler (W, 2-0) made easy work of the Sharks, going the complete game (seven innings for a CPL double-header), giving up only one hit and striking out five, facing the minimum 21 batters. After an infield single in the first, Beeler retired the final 19 hitters he faced. His counterpart, Joe Wagstaff (L, 2-2) pitched well himself, going the complete game, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out a season-high nine.

The RedWolves (20-8, 2-0 CPL second half) struck in the fourth when Mac Doyle doubled down the left-field line to score Trey Hernandez from second. Then in what seemed like déjà-vu, Ronnie Freeman doubled down the left-field line to score Hernandez from second to make it 2-0.

Florence added insurance runs in the sixth when Doyle tripled to right-center, scoring Ethan Santora from first. Doyle was brought home when Freeman flew out to right field, making the score 4-0.

In the second game, the Sharks (14-17, 0-3 CPL second half) played the RedWolves to a scoreless deadlock for the first four innings. However Florence was able to break through in the fifth when Ben Scott singled to right field, scoring Santora from second to make it 1-0.

The Sharks were able to puts runners in scoring position in the final four innings, but were unable to break RedWolves game two starter Colby Holmes (W, 1-2) or reliever Samuel O’Neil.

The RedWolves broke the second game open in the sixth with three runs to make it 4-0. Florence opened up the inning with three consecutive singles, the last of which caused the Sharks only error of the game, a one base throwing error by third baseman Chris Mazza and scored Tyler Boyd to make it 2-0.

Hernandez’s single, which scored Herman Petzold to make it 3-0, was the last pitch for Sharks game two starter Zach Taylor (L, 2-1) as he gave way to Corey Carver. He wasn’t able to end the bleeding immediately as a wild pitch brought home Stephen Carmon to make it 4-0.

The Sharks now haven’t scored a run in their last 19 innings and only mustered five hits against the RedWolves on the night.

The Sharks look for their first CPL second half win on Saturday, July 3rd against the Morehead City Marlins at 7:05 p.m. Saturday’s game will be preceded by the annual Guns versus Hoses charity softball game where the Wilmington Fire Department and Wilmington Police Department will battle at 5:00 p.m. to raise money for their respective charities. Gates open at 4:45 p.m.

Following the Sharks game will be the return of the popular Independence Day fireworks show presented by Taco Bell. The Adult Swim $2 ticket and $2 drink refill deal will be in effect for Saturday’s game as well.
