The Sharks headed into Florence last night riding a three game road win streak and playing the RedWolves for a share of first place in the Coastal Plain League south division. But the Sharks starting pitching was uncharacteristically ineffective as Justin Bradley was knocked out of the game in the third inning and Florence tagged Wilmington for a season-high twelve runs in a 12-3 victory.
Florence led last night's game 11-1 after three innings, buoyed by a six-run third. Mac Doyle started off the scoring with an RBI single. Stephen Carmon was next with an RBI base knock. Justin Bradley hit Corey Tilton with a pitch to load the bases, bringing Herman Petzold to the plate and Petzold took full advantage of the bases loaded opportunity, hitting a grand slam. It was just part of a monster night for Petzold, who went three-for-three with two runs scored and six runs batted in. Florence added another run in the fourth on a Doyle sacrifice fly. The sharks would get on the board with a run in the third off Florence starter Patrick Dolan, and then one in the seventh and eighth off reliever Kyle Deese. But Samuel O'neill quietly retired the sharks in the top of the ninth. It was a rare shaky starting effort for the Sharks. Bradley went two and two-thirds, allowing eight hits on eleven runs while walking four and striking out two. He also hit a batter and allowed three wild pitches. With the loss, Wilmington drops to 8-7, two games behind Florence for the division lead. The Sharks take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs Tuesday June 15 at Buck Hardee Field. It's Time Warner Cable Two 'Fer Tuesday and Budweiser Party on the Patio. Fans get two tickets, two hot dogs and two beverages all for the price of one! Gates open at 6 p.m. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
