Wilmington Sharks - Where Baseball Is Fun

The Sharks will at worst go four and eight, a decent .500, to end the season. As winners of four of their last six however, they have a chance to get to the twenty win mark on the campaign.

To help take step one of their two win journey, a lefty coming off a sparkling month of July relief will look to conquer the swampland in a new month. Another help in the journey could be a Shark defense that settled in nicely during 2009.

While it would be easy to discount the last two games and begin lamenting what could of been by saying things like, "Well a .500 record would have put us in the post season," or, "If only those one run games had gone our way more often," Shark Bits is still focused on what's left of the season.

Long Day's Journey to a Split Print E-mail

An early double header turned into a late marathon of baseball at the "Shark Tank" Sunday night. In the end the Sharks split two games with the Wilson Tobs, a 3-1 loss in game one and a 3-2 win in game two.

A two hour and forty minute delay kept things from kicking off in the afternoon hours, but once the ball game got started, there was just one more delay.

The Sharks got off to a lead early in both games. After the first three batters reached on two base hits and a walk, Michael Rooney(UNC-Wilmington) came home on a fielders choice off the bat of Greg Bachman(Austin Peay).

Two hits produced two runs in the second inning for the Sharks Satuday night, but that was the extent of the offense as the final 16 batters went down in order to three Fayetteville pitchers.

With two down Cole Rakar(College of Charleston) singled then stole second. Trevor Willis(Iowa) then lofted a fly ball to center that found the turf and gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

The Swampdogs tied things in the 5th off of starter J.C. Casey(Missouri State) and would pick up an unearned run off of Ryan McGrath(Wake Forest) in the ninth to steal the 2-1 win.

Reliever Chris Kennedy(Davidson) threw three strong innings of middle relief holding the Swampdogs to one hit. Casey finished his first CPL start after four and two thirds with six strike outs.
