Former Shark Debuts with Athletics Print E-mail

Landon Powell, a catcher for the Oakland Athletics, the 24th overall pick in 2004, and a former Wilmington Shark made his Major League debut on Saturday.

With his debut, Powell became the 32nd Coastal Plain League alumnus to make it to the big leagues, and the first of the 2009 MLB season. He is only the second former Shark to do so, the first being Tom Mastny, who spent the 2002 summer in Wilmington.

Sharks Add Two to Coaching Staff Print E-mail

Newcomers Jeff Fetzner and Ryan Maxa will be joining the Wilmington Sharks as assistant coaches this season. They will be working with Jake Tenhouse, the head coach for the Sharks and assistant coach for St. Joseph’s College, who handpicked them for the jobs.

Sharks Sign Local Standout Print E-mail

The Wilmington Sharks have signed a duo from Campbell University for the upcoming season. Wilmington native, Hunter Ford, a junior and Graham Fronk, a sophomore hailing from Charlotte are the latest additions to the 2009 Sharks roster.

Ford, a left-handed pitcher, finished last season with 70 innings pitched in 27 games with a 4.50 ERA while holding opponents to a .284 batting average.  In high school, Ford was named to the N.C. Preps All-State team and was an All-Conference selection for the Mid Eastern Conference He finished his junior season at Ashley High School with a 1.14 ERA and the school record for most shutouts in a season.
