Chris Mazza received the news that every player wants to hear on Tuesday night, as he was selected 838th overall in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft by the Minnesota Twins.
The Clayton, Ca. native was selected in the midst of the Sharks game in Florence on June 7. Mazza, who plays collegiately at Menlo College, did not play in the game.

Chris Mazza was taken 838th overall in the 2011 MLB Draft.
Mazza has appeared in two games for the Sharks this summer, and has not allowed a run in seven total innings of work. In his one start on June 3, Mazza tossed six shutout innings and struck out 10 batters while allowing only four hits.
“On behalf of the entire Sharks organization, I would like to congratulate Chris on his selection in the Major League Baseball Draft. He has been a great player with us both last season and this season, and we wish him the best in the future and with his decision,” Wilmington general manager Andrew Aguilar said.
The Wilmington Sharks are members of Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league.

The Wilmington Sharks look to finish off their three-game road trip with a win tonight against the Florence RedWolves before they return home to the Shark Tank for a three-game home stand Wednesday through Friday nights.
The road trip began with a loss on Saturday night when the Columbia Blowfish knocked off the Sharks with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth on Military Appriciation Night in Columbia.
Justyn Carter, Ricardo Lizcano and Jake Mayers each had two hits apiece, with Mayers driving in two RBIs and Lizcano and Daniel Aldrich each adding an RBI.
Monday night gave the Sharks a win in a big way, as they tallied a 14-5 win over the Fayetteville Swampdogs in Fayetteville.
Aldrich led the offensive attack with three hits, while Lizcano, Kenny Bryant, Aaron Preston and Russ Stupienski all added two hits in the rout.
Carter, Mayers, Preston and Scott Coleman each drove home two RBI in the win as well.
Mayers also earned the win on the mound for the Sharks, as he tossed five innings and allowed seven hits and had four strikeouts while giving up five earned runs.
Ricardo Lizcano has had four hits and two RBI in the first two games of the Sharks road trip. |

Aaron Preston’s single to left field scored Justyn Carter from second base to give the Wilmington Sharks a 6-5 win over the Florence RedWolves (2-2) in 11 innings Friday night.
Carter reached base after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved up to second base after a walk to Ricardo Lizcano. After a popup, Preston sent a 1-1 pitch through the hole between third baseman and shortstop for the game-winner.
Preston said that at first he was unsure if the ball would get through, but once it did he “knew it was over” with Carter’s speed on the bases.
After dropping their first three games of the season, the Sharks have now won two in a row and improve to 2-3 overall.
Sharks reliever Ross Whitley tossed the final three innings and picked up the win after holding Florence scoreless and allowing only two hits over the three frames.
The Sharks jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the second and then adding a run in both the second and third innings. Florence scored a run in the fifth to cut into the margin before adding two runs in the seventh to pull within one at 4-3.
Wilmington added another run in the bottom of the seventh, which turned out to be huge, as Florence added two more runs in the eighth that tied the game at five-all.
Preston finished the night 3-for-6 with the game-winning RBI, while Lizcano tallied a 2-for-3 night with two walks and scored twice.
Michael Wilson turned in a three-hit night and Adam Engel drove in three RBIs for the RedWolves in the loss.
The Sharks now hit the road, with games at Columbia Saturday night, at Fayetteville Monday night and in Florence on Tuesday night before returning back to the Shark Tank on Wednesday night when they open a three-game home stand against Fayetteville. |

The Wilmington Sharks had to wait a couple hours longer than they anticipated, but they picked up their first win of the season (1-3) in a 4-0 win in game two of a Coastal Plain League doubleheader against the Morehead City Marlins (1-3) after falling 3-2 in game one.
In the opener, the Sharks pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth after hits by Justyn Carter and Ricardo Lizcano to start the inning before they scored on an RBI single by Aaron Preston and a bases-loaded RBI walk by Alex Freedman.
However, the lead was not secure, as the visiting Marlins answered with two runs in the top of the sixth before plating the eventual game-winning run in the seventh after a leadoff walk.
The second game turned into a great pitchers dual, with Nick Sequila (1-0) earning the win for the Sharks after tossing six shutout innings while allowing only three hits and striking out six Marlins batters.
Wilmington got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Casey Allison’s two-RBI single that came with two outs.
Two insurance runs came in the bottom of the sixth, when Scott Colman walked before scoring on Emilio Pagon’s RBI double before Tommy Houmard followed Pagon with an RBI double of his own to cap the scoring.
The game two win also gave Sharks head coach Chris Youngberg his first win with Wilmington.
The Sharks are back in action on Friday night, June 3, when they host the Florence Redwolves in a 7 p.m. matchup with Taco Bell postgame fireworks. The game is also American Heart Association Night and Chevy Night. |
