Early runs not enough in Sharks road loss Print E-mail
Saturday, 11 June 2011 21:14

The Wilmington Sharks posted two first inning runs on Saturday night, but did not push across another run over the final eight innings as they fell to the Morehead City Marlins 4-2 in Morehead City.

The Sharks fall to 4-7 with the loss while Morehead City improves to 6-6 with the win.

Jake Mayers finished the night 3-for-4 with an RBI and Kenny Bryant was 1-for-2 with an RBI single and two walks to lead Wilmington.

Walks to both Justyn Carter and Daniel Aldrich in the top of the first allowed Mayers and Bryant to pick up back-to-back RBI singles to give Wilmington the early lead.

The lead would be shortlived, however, as Morehead City answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first before plating two in the second and a final run in the third inning for all of the night’s scoring.

Starter Chris Mazza (0-1) took the loss for the Sharks, allowing all four runs in 5-2/3 innings of work while Shawn Armstrong (1-0) tallied the win for the Marlins in five innings of work with six strikeouts in the battle of 2011 MLB Draftees.

The two teams will be back in action again in Morehead City on Sunday before the Sharks wrap up their road trip when they travel to Florence Monday night. The Sharks next home game will be Tuesday, June 14 when they host Thomasville.

Daniel Aldrich, Jake Mayers, Kenny Bryant, Aaron Preston and Casey Allison all drove in two RBIs in the game, while Russ Stupienski and Alex Freedman both picked up an RBI each.

As a team, the Sharks totaled 16 hits on the night, with Justyn Carter, Mayers and Bryant each finishing with three-hit performances.

Ross Whitley (2-1) picked up the win for the Sharks, throwing 3-2/3 innings out of the bullpen and allowing only two hits in that span.

Five first inning runs gave the Wilmington Sharks a lead that would never be in doubt as they grabbed an easy, 8-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes of the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League in an exhibition contest  Thursday night.

Lead aside, the Sharks provided more than enough run support for starter Chris Knauff, who tossed 6-1/3 innings of five hit, five strikeout baseball.

Daniel Aldrich and Aaron Preston each finished with two hits on the night, as four other Sharks contributed a hit apiece.

Casey Allision led the team with two RBIs, while Aldrich, Preston, Scott Coleman and Jake Mayers all tallied an RBI in the game as well.

Back-to-back walks in the bottom of the first inning gave the Sharks two base runners before Aldrich connected on an RBI single to open the scoring. A Hurricane error plated another run before Preston delivered his RBI double and scored on Allison’s two-run single to cap the first inning scoring.

Another pair of walks came around to score on another Hurricane error in the third to increase the Wilmington margin to seven runs.

The Hurricanes plated their only run in the seventh after Johann Knee led off the inning with a single before coming around to score later in the inning.

Wilmington added a final run in the bottom of the eighth when Tommy Houmard picked up a pinch-hit single before coming around to on an RBI pinch-hit single by Ricardo Lizcano.

Carolina starter Timothy Silsby was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs and only recording one out in the first inning before being pulled.

The Wilmington Sharks are back in action Friday night as they jump back into Coastal Plain League action when they host the Columbia Blowfish on Time Warner Cable seat cushion giveaway night. Gates open at 6 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.

Sharks ninth inning dramatics fall short Print E-mail
Wednesday, 08 June 2011 21:25

The Wilmington Sharks made things interesting in the ninth inning on Wednesday night, but left the tying run 90 feet away as they fell 5-4 to the visiting Fayetteville Swampdogs.

After Fayetteville broke a 2-2 tie by scoring three runs in the top of the eighth, the Sharks rallied only to fall just short.

Jake Mayers led off the ninth by reaching on an error before Kenny Bryant connected on a line drive two-run homer to right field to pull the hosts within one run with no one out.

Fayetteville recorded a strikeout for the first out of the inning before Casey Allison knocked a double to left field to heighten the intensity. But the Swampdogs ended the ideas of a comeback by striking out the final two batters of the night and leave Allison stranded on third base.

Late inning opposition runs spoiled another great effort from a Sharks starting pitcher, as Steven Vaughn threw 8-1/3 innings of six hit baseball, but allowed the two Fayetteville runs in the eighth and left with a no decision.

Jake Mayers led the Sharks with a 3-for4 night at the plate, while Justyn Carter and Allison added two hits apiece in the loss.

Joe Vaskas and Billy Urban each added two hits in the win, with Urban adding two RBIs.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning, with the Sharks taking a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth only to see Fayetteville again tie the game with a run of their own in the top of the sixth.

The Swampdogs gained the lead after the three-run eighth inning, but Bryant’s homer made things interesting.

The Sharks fall to 3-6 on the season while Fayetteville improves to 7-1. Wilmington will continue its homestand on Thursday night when they host the Carolina Hurricanes from the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League and will end on Friday night when they host CPL foe Columbia.
