Sharks blow through Petersburg in middle of road trip Print E-mail
Sunday, 26 June 2011 21:39

The Wilmington Sharks (10-13) bats came to play on Saturday night, plating eight runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 16-1 win over the Petersburg Generals (3-20) on the second of four straight road games for the Sharks.

The offensive output overshadowed the strong performance the Sharks received from starting pitcher Jake Mayers, who earned his second win of the season after tossing seven innings of two-hit baseball and carrying a no hitter into the sixth inning. Mayers also struck out six Generals while allowing no runs and only one walk in the outing.

Carter

Justyn Carter had a three-hit, two-RBI night in the Sharks' big win Saturday night.

The Sharks started hot and never looked back, bringing 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first and plating the eight runs on four hits in the inning.

In that first inning, Alex Freedman’s three-RBI double was the big hit in the inning, while Justyn Carter doubled and drove in two RBI in his second at bat of the inning. Daniel Aldrich and K.J. McAllister each had an RBI in the inning on groundouts as well.

The third inning saw Wilmington plate two more runs off of Ricardo Lizcano’s two-RBI single that plated Evan Campbell and McAllister as the lead swelled to 10-0.

A five-run fifth inning all but finished off the game, as the Sharks tallied six hits in the inning. Casey Allison came into the game and lifted an RBI double which was followed up two batters later by a Mayers’ RBI single. Also coming into the game, Scott Coleman and Emilio Pagan each tagged doubles to the gap, with Coleman picking up an RBI while Pagan’s hit gave him two RBIs.

The Sharks final run of the night came when Russ Stupienski picked up an RBI when he drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth.

Lizcano and Freedman each tallied three RBIs to lead the Sharks in that category, while Carter and Pagan each had a two-RBI night. Carter’s two-RBI night came as part of his 3-for-5 night at the plate, the only Shark to have a three-hit night in the win.

The Wilmington Sharks (9-13) received six strong innings of work from starting pitcher Chris Mazza and had the bats working early in their 3-2 win over the Peninsula Pilots (12-11) on Friday night in the first of four straight on the road.

Mazza (1-2) was brilliant, tossing six innings and allowing just four hits and one run while striking out five Peninsula batters. Over his first four innings, Mazza allowed just one hit.

Mazza

Chris Mazza pitched a gem for the Sharks Friday night.

While Mazza was dealing, the Sharks offense also put in some work in the early innings, plating all three runs in the first four innings.

The Sharks’ first run of the night came off of a Kenny Bryant RBI double that sailed over the head of the Peninsula center fielder in the opening frame that scored Evan Campbell, while Wilmington added their second run two innings later when Aaron Preston ripped an RBI double into the left-center field gap that scored Ricardo Lizcano.

The final run of the night for the visiting Sharks came in the top of the fourth as Campbell singled with two outs before he later scored on a Daniel Aldrich RBI single right back up the middle.

Peninsula tallied its first run of the night in the fifth, using a pair of hits to get onto the scoreboard.

The host Pilots had a chance to tie or possibly take the lead in the bottom of the sixth when they had the bases loaded and two outs, but Mazza shut down any thoughts the Pilots might have had with a strikeout to end the inning and escape the jam.

Peninsula scored its second and final run of the night in the seventh off of Sharks reliever Tyler Deloach, when they connected on a triple into the right field corner before plating the run via an RBI groundout.

Wilmington’s Ross Whitely earned his second save of the summer after striking out two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth.

Aldrich was the only Shark to pick up multiple hits on the night, tallying two of the five total Wilmington hits.

The Sharks spend the night in Petersburg, Va. on Friday night before they continue their road trip against the Petersburg Generals Saturday night. Sunday the Sharks travel to take on Columbia before ending the trip with a contest at Morehead City on Monday night.

Sharks lose rain-shortened contest to end home stand Print E-mail
Thursday, 23 June 2011 22:08

Two rain delays rolled through the Shark Tank on Thursday night, and the Sharks (8-12) ended their four game home stand with an abbreviated, 6-3 loss to the Florence RedWolves (12-9) after the second rain delay ended the game early in the top of the seventh.

The first delay came between the top and bottom of the second inning and lasted close to an hour before the tarps were pulled off and play was resumed. With the second delay, the sky opened up and buckets fell onto the field and the tarps were only able to be placed on the mound and plate areas, leaving puddles around the infield.

McAllister

K.J. McAllister tallied two hits and an RBI in the Sharks' loss Thursday night.

Florence was in the lead throughout the shortened contest, as they scored two in the top of the first and added a third run in the top of the second before the first delay.

After the first delay, Florence tacked on a third run in the top of the third inning and another in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

The Sharks only offensive noise of the night came in the bottom of the fifth, when Daniel Aldrich blasted a two-run homer to deep right-center field that cut the Wilmington deficit to 5-2.

The two teams traded runs in the sixth to bring the game to what ended up as its final score after the second band of rain came rolling through.

For the Sharks, Kenny Bryant and K.J. McAllister both tallied 2-for-3 hitting lines, while McAllister also picked up an RBI that drove in the Sharks final run of the night.

Josh Miller had a 3-for-4 night with two RBIs to lead the RedWolves.

Despite both only pitching to a handful of batters and neither coming back after the first rain delay, both starters factored in to the decisions, with the Sharks’ Chris O’Grady falling to 1-1 while Willi Martin improved to 1-1 for Florence.

The Sharks hit the road for four straight before returning to the Shark Tank on Tuesday, June 28 as they host Columbia in a Time Warner Cable Two ‘fer Tuesday matchup.

Sharks fall in 11 innings Print E-mail

The Wilmington Sharks had a three-run after six innings, but a Fayetteville three-run homer tied it before the visiting Swampdogs plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning to take a 5-4 win Wednesday night.

The stat of the night, however, was that the Sharks left 11 runners on base throughout the contest.

After a Billy Urban leadoff single in the top of the 11th came around to score two batters later for Fayetteville, the Sharks had their own opportunity in the bottom of the frame, with leadoff batter Scott Coleman reaching on an error before he was stranded at second base to end the game.

Fayetteville (11-9) took an early lead in the top of the first and the game remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Sharks (8-11) plated their first run of the night on an RBI groundout that plated Evan Campbell.

An inning later the Sharks added to their lead with a pair of walks and two singles plating three runs, highlighted by Jake Mayers’ two RBI single that made it 4-1 in favor of the Sharks.

The lead would be short lived however, as Fayetteville immediately answered with a three-run homer by Zach Briggs tied things right back up.

Carter

Justyn Carter had two hits and an RBI in the Sharks loss Wednesday night.

The Sharks had only one hit, in the eighth, and two base runners after the Fayetteville homer.

Justyn Carter, Campbell, Mayers and Coleman each had two-hit nights to pace the Sharks, while Urban’s 3-for-5 night led the Swampdogs.

Mayers finished with two RBI on the night, while Carter and Lizcano each tallied an RBI a piece for Wilmington, while three RBI from Briggs was a team high for Fayetteville.

The Sharks finish off their four-game home stand on Thursday night as they host Florence in a Fat Tony’s Thirsty Thursday contest. Wilmington then hits the road for four straight before returning to the Shark Tank on Tuesday, June 28 when they host Columbia.
